Created in His Image

According to the Bible, the first man was perfect, made in the image of God. Luke goes so far as to call Adam the son of God. (Luke 3:38). Since man is human, but made in the image of God, language, creativity, love, holiness, morality and freedom are all attributes he can possess. These separate him from the animal kingdom. This can be summed up in the phrase: Man, like his Maker, has a mind.

Man, made in the image of God; what does this mean in practical terms? It cannot refer to bodily, biological form since God is a Spirit and man is earthly. Having the image or likeness of God means, in the simplest terms, were made to resemble God. Adam did not resemble God in the sense of God having flesh and blood. While it may be true that the body does not belong to the image, since God does not have a body, somehow we would like to see man’s body included in the image. Scripture says, “God is Spirit” and therefore exists without a body. However, Adam’s body did mirror the likeness of God's in that it was created in perfect health and was not subject to death.

The image of God refers to the immaterial part of man. It sets man apart from the animal world, fits him for dominion that God intended him to have over the earth. It enables him to commune with his Maker. It is a likeness mentally, morally and socially.

God breathed into man and made him a living soul. There was a time your weren’t but now that you are there will never be a time you will not be. It is the eternal part of man. The stamp of eternity!! The word says that deep calls to deep. It is the depth of God that calls to the depth of man. It’s that place of fellowship with the creator.

I want to encourage you to realize who and what you have been created to be. Understand that there is much more to you then what meets the eye every morning looking back in the mirror. If we can have an awareness of where and what we come from and what we come from it will change where we are going and what we become during the journey.

Next week I want to deal with the mentally, morally and socially aspect!!

God bless you
